Is Kevin Costner in the Spinoff?

Kevin Costner will not appear in Dutton Ranch.

Following the death of John Dutton in the premiere of Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2, the franchise has moved forward. While John Dutton remains the spiritual patriarch of the series, the narrative is now focused on the survivors.

Why Costner Is Out

The exit was fueled by a public fallout between Costner and showrunner Taylor Sheridan, alongside scheduling conflicts with Costner’s Western epic project. For Dutton Ranch, the producers have chosen to lean into the “survivor” era of the family rather than attempting a recast or a flashback heavy narrative.

Where Is the New Ranch Located?

The story has officially left the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. The new series is set in Rio Paloma, South Texas.

While Beth and Rip initially looked at properties in Montana during the Yellowstone finale, the spinoff confirms they have relocated to a 7,000 acre property known as the Edward’s Ranch.

Filming Locations in Texas

To capture the authentic heat and red dirt of the borderlands, production moved to Ferris, Texas. This small town south of Dallas serves as the primary backdrop for Rio Paloma.

This shift in geography changes the stakes for the characters. In Montana, the Dutton name provided protection. In South Texas, Beth and Rip are outsiders in a territory already owned by established, ruthless powers.

A large stylized 'R' and the 'Y' brand overlay their faces, with fire sparks in the air and the 'May 15' premiere date and Paramount+ logo at the bottom.

Which Yellowstone Characters Are Returning?

The spinoff keeps the core family unit intact while stripping away the political safety net of the Governor’s office.

Returning Lead Cast

  • Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton): Now the undisputed lead of the franchise. Beth is navigating her grief while attempting to build a new empire from scratch.

  • Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler): Rip remains the muscle and heart of the operation, though the transition to the Texas heat and different ranching styles poses new challenges.

  • Finn Little (Carter): Now a young man, Carter’s arc in this spinoff focuses on him becoming the next generation of the ranch’s legacy.

Supporting Cameos

While the show is a fresh start, expect appearances from former ranch hands and a few familiar faces from the 6666 Ranch, as the two properties are narratively linked in this new Texas landscape.

Who Are Ed Harris and Annette Bening Playing?

To fill the void left by Kevin Costner, Paramount has recruited two Oscar caliber heavyweights to serve as the new anchors of the series.

Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson

Annette Bening plays Beulah Jackson, the primary antagonist of the season. She is the matriarch of a rival Texas ranching dynasty. Unlike the corporate villains Beth faced in Montana, Beulah is a local force who views the Duttons as an invasive species. The chemistry between Bening and Kelly Reilly is expected to be the driving force of the show’s tension.

Ed Harris as Everett McKinney

Ed Harris portrays Everett McKinney. Initially rumored to be a villain, McKinney is actually a retired veteran and a local veterinarian. In the world of Taylor Sheridan, the local vet often knows more secrets than the sheriff. Harris brings a “quiet danger” to the role, acting as a wary ally to Rip Wheeler as they navigate the complexities of the South Texas border.

Dutton Ranch vs. 6666: The Difference

There has been significant confusion regarding whether Dutton Ranch is the same project as the long delayed 6666 series.

They are two separate shows.

While Dutton Ranch follows Beth and Rip on their own private land in Rio Paloma, the 6666 series remains in separate development and will focus more on the history of the legendary Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas.
